For a limited time the Tamworth Regional Gallery is exhibiting a collection of artworks and memorabilia that explore the impact that Legacy has had on people from Tamworth and surrounding areas. The exhibition celebrates 100 years of Legacy in Australia and the 75th anniversary of Legacy in Tamworth.

The exhibition will be open from 14 April-18 June at the Tamworth Regional Gallery. Members of the public are invited to take a trip down memory lane and explore the impact that Legacy had on veterans, widows and children after Australian service personnel returned from World War One and the work Legacy continue to do after more recent conflicts. The exhibit includes memorabilia such as the inaugural bell that was gifted to Tamworth Legacy from Newcastle Legacy when the club was founded.

A sneak peak at the exhibition:

Story from Moonbi Museum Collection.

Bev Albertson (née Coleman) – Wedding photos: shown above

My grandfather, Hugh Lyle Flanagan, served in WWI in the 33rd Infantry Battalion – Service No. 2783, which he joined on 30 August 1916. Hugh returned to Australia but died later, leaving his wife, Edith Lola Flanagan, a war widow.

Once a year, Legacy would hold a family day and my cousin Barry Coleman usually attended with Grandma (Edith Flanagan).

One year, Grandma asked me to go with her. We travelled to Tamworth from Moonbi on the bus and walked to the Capitol Theatre for a movie afternoon.

After the movie we travelled to the Peel Barracks on the corner of Peel and Darling streets with a friend of Grandma’s, Dempsey Morris, and her three children.

Here we had afternoon tea and games for the children. One competition was to blow a balloon up until it burst. I did it and won a pen.

Grandma appreciated Legacy. Mr Kidd from Legacy would call to see Grandma every month, to ensure the family were going well and to see if they needed anything. Mr Mackie followed Mr Kidd in this position and continued to support families in the district with Legacy. At Christmas the family would receive a food hamper, which was a great help in those days.
